First introduced at the 1933 Motor Show, the ‘Le Mans Special Four Seater’ was built rakishly low, with an external exhaust and sporty cycle wings. Only fifteen examples were built in 1933 before the model was superseded by the Mark II, ‘BME 208’ being the last ‘Le Mans’ manufactured.
First registered on March 22nd 1934, ‘BME 208’ was sold to its first owner Messrs Burns & Co of Newcastle-on-Tyne. Ownership is known from new until it entered the Doune collection in 1964.
In Peter Hugo’s book, ‘Private Motor Car Collections of Great Britain’, he includes The Doune Collection in Perthshire which became a well-known Museum for motoring enthusiasts until its dispersal after the Museum closed in 1998.
Once released from its thirty three years of Scottish captivity, Mr Peter Dubsky of Vienna Austria bought the car and engaged Ecurie Bertelli Limited, then the World’s leading pre-war Aston Martin specialists, to maintain the car. In 2005 Ecurie Bertelli sold the car to Monsieur Philippe Lantanier of Paris who campaigned the car frequently in events such as the Le Mans Classic, and it remained in France until acquired by our client.
With over £45,000 of invoices from Ecurie Bertelli, including a full engine rebuild, this is a well maintained Le Mans with known history from new. It has just been the subject of an extensive service, and is accompanied by three weighty history files documenting its fascinating life from new.
